The Irish Famine in Art

Updated: Jan 31, 2020

When it comes to An Gorta Mór, there is a continuum of artistic representations from fine art and literature, poetry and drama, to memorial sculptures both small and monumental.

The Famine Memorial Statues pictured here at Custom House Quay, in Dublin city center are by renowned sculptor, Rowan Gillespie. Interestingly, Patrick Gillespie created the memorial sculpture to the fateful famine ship Exmouth which sank at Islay in Scotland.

Dr. Emily Mark-Fitzgerald (UCD)
