Irish Famine WAY
Connacht
Connacht Information
Connacht is the western most province of Ireland. It is the least populated region in Ireland, largely due to the effects of the Famine itself. Connacht was the region most effected by the Irish Famine; this was due to the area being primarily populated by Catholic Irish -speaking tenants whom were evicted upon the successive failure of harvests as their landlords simply fled the area during the hard times. This large concentration of Catholics in Connacht, was due to their being forcefully moved to Connacht by the Cromwellian Land Confiscations. The loss of life in Connacht greatly damaged the Irish language and it's culture overall.
